Fiona Norris is the 2010 Lanarkshire Champion

Fiona Norris Fiona Norris --- 2010 Lanarkshire County Champion

Hamilton's Fiona Norris, sister of LPGA Tour player Mhairi McKay, retained the Lanarkshire women's county golf championship at Hayston Golf Club today
Fiona added to her previous title wins in 1988, 1992 and 2009 by beating the No 1 seed, Lesley Lloyd (Hayston), county captain and daughter of the former Scottish PGA secretary, by 4 and 3 in the final.
Norris, the No 3 qualifier, siezed the initiative by winning the first two holes, the second with a birdie but Lloyd was not overawed and hit back with birdies of her own at the third and sixth to square the match.
Norris was two up at the turn after winning the seventh and eighth. The writing was on the wall for Lloyd when she went three down at the 11th and four down at the next which Norris birdied. The remaining holes were halved in par before they shook hands on the 15th green.
It was the sixth time Lloyd had lost in the final since 1998, the year after she won the Lanark title.
Today's results:
Semi-finals - Lesley Lloyd (Hayston) beat Elaine Cuthill (Lanark) 4 and 3, Fiona Norris (Hamilton) beat Susan Wood (Drumpellier) 3 and 2.
Final - Norris beat Lloyd 4 and 3.

Kylie Walker does well in the Xltec Pro Tour at Hilton Park Golf Club

Cawder's Chris Kelly, the man of the moment in Scottish pro golf, made it back to back wins by heading a field of 47 at the second 36-hole event of the Xltec Pro Tour at Hilton Park Golf Club, near Glasgow today.
Perhaps the day belonged to 24 year old lady professional Corisande Lee from West Lancs, pictured by Cal Carson Golf Agency. Playing in only her third professional event she carded brilliant rounds of 68 and 69 - over a 10% shorter course than her male rivals - to finish joint third overall event on 137.
That secured her £600 of the official prize money, plus a £400 bonus as the leading lady professional, which meant her "take-home pay" to Lancashire was £1,000 - £150 more than the winner and playing partner Chris Kelly, who said “Cori really is one for the future and I am sure it will not be too long until we see her making the same impact on the Ladies European Tour."
Hilton Park amateur Gordon Yates heads to this week’s Lytham Trophy in fine form after also shooting 68 and 69 to finish joint third on 137.
West of Scotland's Kylie Walker finished in joint 13th place and Clare Queen in
36th place

Masterful Mickleson Confirmed for the Barclays Scottish Open

Masters Champion Phil Mickelson has confirmed his entry to The Barclays Scottish Open at Loch Lomond Golf Club from July 8-11.

The American left-hander once again proved himself one of golf's most gifted shot-makers during his unforgettable victory at Augusta National recently as he picked up the third Green Jacket, and fourth Major title, of his glittering career.

Mickelson, a winner of 44 titles around the world, will return to the banks of Loch Lomond hoping to improve upon his second place finish of 2007 when he lost out to Frenchman Grégory Havret in a sudden-death play-off.

"Returning to Loch Lomond for The Barclays Scottish Open is always a special week for me," said Mickelson, who last played at Loch Lomond in 2008. "Everything about the tournament, from the sponsors, to the golf course and the stunning setting at Loch Lomond is as good as it gets in golf and I am proud to be associated with the event.

"I would love to add The Barclays Scottish Open to my list of career wins: to be successful in Scotland, the home of golf, is something that every player would love to have on his resume and I am no different.

"I have been close to winning The Barclays Scottish Open in the past, and it would be great to go one better than in 2007 when I narrowly missed out on the trophy in a play-off."

Mickelson is the first of the game's elite players to commit to The Barclays Scottish Open, with other star names to be announced in the coming weeks. Event organisers are anticipating one of the strongest fields in the tournament's history, one week before The 150th Anniversary Open Championship at St Andrews.

There are few more exciting draws in golf than Mickelson, a point he proved emphatically at Augusta earlier this month. The 39 year old produced some mesmeric shot-making over the final two rounds, with his unbelievable eagle-eagle-birdie run on the Saturday afternoon helping him to a third round 67 that hauled him into contention and a final round showdown with Englishman Lee Westwood.

Mickelson followed up his Saturday heroics with a sterling , bogey free 67 in the final round, and his miraculous approach to the par five 13th – a six iron from the Augusta pine needles that flew through a gap between two trees and soared over Rae's Creek to just four feet – was the perfect summation of his powers as he captured his third Masters title.

Fans hoping to catch a glimpse of Mickelson's genius at Loch Lomond can purchase discounted tickets at: Barclays Open Website

4. AMY BOULDEN Maesdu Wales Age 16

Team Captain: MARY McKENNA (Donabate GC, Ireland).
Team Manager TEGWEN MATTHEWS (Wales).

Only Sally Watson, now a student at Stanford University, California, survives from the Great Britain & Ireland team who played the historic 2008 match over the Old Course, St Andrews.
Six of the players selected to contest this 2010 Curtis Cup match gained international experience as part of the GB&I team which lost narrowly in last year’s Vagliano Trophy match at Hamburg.
Rachel Jennings, Pamela Pretswell, Sally Watson, twins Leona and Lisa Maguire and Danielle McVeigh will look forward to representing GB & I in June. They will be joined by two players who will gain their first Great Britain & Ireland team honours and England’s Hannah Barwood and Holly Clyburn, both aged 19 will be new faces in the GB & I line up. Hannah, winner of the English Women’s Amateur Championship in 2008, was a quarter-finalist in this year’s Spanish Ladies’ Open Amateur Championship and the French Under-21 Open Amateur Championship. She also finished joint third in the Helen Holm Scottish Ladies’ Open Amateur Championship at Troon at the weekend.
Holly, the English Girls’ Champion in 2008, was runner-up in this year’s Under-21 event in the Faldo Series Asia Grand Final in China, and has also won the Faldo Series Girls’ Championship in Brazil last autumn. She was also runner-up in the Dixie Women’s Amateur at the start of the year. Playing with Rachel Jennings, the 2006 English Girls’ Champion, Holly helped England to fourth place in the women’s event at the Spirit International in Texas last November.
Sally Watson has been competing in the United States for several years. She is coming to the end of her freshman year at Stanford University. Last week she was named to the All-Pac-10 women’s second team, having been a winner, in February, on the US women’s college circuit. She had four top-10 finishes and led the Stanford team in stroke average. She was a beaten finalist in the 2006 British Girls’ Championship, having come to the fore as a 13-year-old when she beat Carly Booth in the 2005 final of the Scottish Under-18 girls championship.
The other Scot in the Curtis Cup squad, Pamela Pretswell is in her junior honours year at Glasgow University and has played little competitive golf since last year’s Home International Matches at Irvine GC. Hamilton-based, Pamela won the 2008 Swiss Women’s Open Amateur Championship, coming from 11 shots in arrears on the final day to win the title.
Pamela did not switch to golf until 2003. Before that she had played tennis for Scotland and Great Britain, having taken part in a GB tennis demonstration on Wimbledon’s Centre Court when she was 12.
Danielle McVeigh’s victory in the ‘Helen Holm’ at Troon on Sunday was her second big win on a Scottish links within a year. She won the Ladies’ British Open Amateur Stroke Play title at Royal Aberdeen last autumn when she again came with a strong late run. She also won the Welsh Open Amateur Stroke Play title in 2009.
Danielle is a member of the Paddy Harrington Golf Scholarship programme at the National University of Ireland, Maynooth where she is a second year student, studying Business and Management. She played for two years on the US college circuit as a student at Texas A&M. McVeigh won the World Student Women’s title in Thailand in 2007.
The Maguire twins, Leona and Lisa, make their Curtis Cup debuts at the age of 15, having set an age record when they appeared at the age of 14 in the GB&I team for last summer’s Vagliano Trophy match.
They will become the youngest GB&I representatives to play in a Curtis Cup. Carly Booth set the age record when she had her 16th birthday on June 2, the day after the 2008 Curtis Cup match finished at St Andrews. The Maguire girls will not be 16 until November 30 so they have the edge by several months over Carly.
The youngest ever player to compete in the Curtis Cup was Michelle Wie who was 14 when she was a member of the United States team at Formby in 2004.
Leona retained the French Under-21 Girls’ Open title earlier this month. Lisa won both the Irish Open Amateur Stroke Play and the Irish Ladies’ (Close) Amateur Championship last year and had won the Helen Holm Scottish Ladies’ Open Amateur Stroke Play title in 2008. Leona beat Lisa in the final of the Irish Ladies’ (Close) Amateur Championship in 2008. The twins helped Ireland win the European Girls’ team title last year and both played for Europe in the Junior Solheim Cup match in America. They were also members of the European team for the Junior Ryder Cup of 2008. They are third year students at Loretto College, Cavan.
GB&I team captain Mary McKenna played in nine Curtis Cup matches between 1970 and 1986 and, in terms of winning individual and foursomes ties, is the most successful GB&I player in Curtis Cup history.
“I am delighted with the team and it is a very good mix of experience and youth. They have all played overseas on in America at some time, so that’s a big plus factor as well. I am looking forward to it,” said Mary McKenna today.
This will be the 36th Curtis Cup match. United States have won 25, Great Britain & Ireland seven, and there have been three drawn matches.
GB&I’s last Curtis Cup victory was at Killarney in 1996 when they won 11 ½-6 ½. They retained the trophy with a drawn match (9-9) at Chattanooga in 1994, having been the winners at Royal Liverpool in 1992.
United States have won the last six – Minikahda (1998), Ganton (2000), Fox Chapel (2002), Formby (2004), Bandon Dunes (2006) and St Andrews (2008).
This will be the first Curtis Cup match in the United States under the three-day format which was introduced at St Andrews in 2008.
Essex County Club was the home club of the Curtis sisters, Harriot and Margaret, and previously hosted the Curtis Cup match in 1938 and a large number of supporters will be making their way across the Atlantic to support the team.

Eilidh and Pamela are the top 2 from the West

The field for the Helen Holm Scottish women's open amateur stroke-play championship at Troon has come tumbling down from 99 entries to only 68 - due mainly to Continental players being unable to get flights in time to reach Ayrshire for Wednesdsay/Thursday's practice rounds - by the time play started this morning in the first round at Troon Portland.
Because of that, the Scottish Ladies Golfing Association organisers have decided to scrap the normal cut after 36 holes to the leading 66 and ties.
On a cold, overcast day with a cool breeze blowing up every now and again, Renfrewshire County Champion for 2010 -- Eilidh Briggs(Kilmacolm) and the 2009 West of Scotland Champion Pamela Pretswell (Bothwell Castle) were the best from the WEST after today's first round

The annual match for the Mary McKenna Salver was due to be hosted by the Irish at Portmarnock, Dublin on Sunday and Monday, but, with all flights cancelled and the ferry full with last minute bookings, there was no way the Scots could get across the Irish Sea.

SLGA Under 16's -- AYRSHIRE Girls do well

Katie McGarva with the best net award at the SLGA Under 16 Championships

Ayrshire Girls at Strathmore 8-9th April 2010
June Kerr (Ayrshire Junior Convenor) said it was a privileged to watch some spectacular golf at Strathmore last week where Ayrshire had no fewer than 5 girls competing.
For Grace Mackie it was her first time at this event and she coped very well scoring 95 and 92 playing off a 20 handicap. I'm sure Grace's handicap will tumble quickly after this experience of playing a new course.
Emma Hale, whose age is the same as her handicap, 13, had two consistent rounds 85 and 84 both in her buffer.
Connie Jaffrey had a disappointing 87 on the first day but put that behind her and came right back with a two over par 74 the next day. Connie was a member of the SLGA's second team competing for the Team Trophy which was won by England's second team.
Rachel Irvine improved on her first round by 14 strokes recording a gross 79 nett 61! This terrific round won Rachel the prize for the best nett on Day 2. Well done Rachel - working on your short game and putting over the winter has clearly paid off.
Last but not least, Katie McGarva played well below her 11 handicap on both days. Her 79 on Day 1 played in tricky windy conditions, she bettered on the second day with a superb 75. These two excellent scores earned Katie the top prize for the best nett aggregate for the championship. Congratulations Katie, keep up the birdies and keep smiling!
All the girls were a credit to our County and a joy to be with.

The SLGA Under 16 Strokeplay

NEWS RELEASE ISSUED BY THE SCOTTISH LADIES GOLFING ASSOCIATION
Lesley Atkins (Minto) and Ailsa Summers (Carnoustie) will be heading the home challenge at the SLGA Scottish Under-16 Open Strokeplay Championship at Strathmore Golf Club near Alyth on Thursday and Friday, April 8-9.
Last season, 14-year-old Lesley underlined her potential by reaching the quarter-finals of the Scottish Ladies’ Amateur Championship at Southerness, while Ailsa is the reigning Scottish Schools’ Champion. Both youngsters played for Scotland in last year’s European Girls’ Team Championship.
Lesley was the leading Scot when she finished fourth in the Under-16 Open last year, and the prestigious Championship has attracted an exceptionally strong entry from south of the border.
Woburn’s Lauren Taylor is the back marker with a plus two handicap, while Bramhall’s Bronte Law is plus one and Brogan Townend (Pleasington) plays off scratch. Lesley and Ailsa, who was 16 in January, both play off three.

The Championship is over 36 holes with one round on Thursday and another on Friday..
