Nikki Ferguson comments on a ban on Junior Girls playing in ladies Competitions

Nikki Ferguson -- Assistant Pro at Cathcart Castle

Ping have stepped in to overturn a widely criticised ban at Thonock Park Golf Club in Gainsborough.

The golf club, which is owned by Ping, voted last week to prohibit junior girls playing in ladies competitions.
Ping seemed less than happy with the decision from the club and immediately stepped in to rectify the situation.
“Upon hearing news on the result of this vote, Ping (the proprietors of Thonock Park) immediately revoked the proposal and have it very clear that it goes completely against the values, principles and philosophies of Ping and would never permit this to go ahead,” read a statement from Ping Europe’s managing director, John Clark
“Ping will continue working very closely with the committees of Thonock Park to ensure the club provides every member with the highest quality experience.
The ban received heavy backlash, with many taking to social media to criticise the decision.
Nikki -- D&A county Champion, Milngavie and Clober Champion 2014

As Past D&A County Champion Nikki Ferguson said on social media

"If I didn’t have the help from Clober and Milngavie GC growing up, I wouldn’t be where I am today! I won the Club Championship when I was a Junior. "

"Dunbartonshire & Argyll Ladies County helped me massively as well. I made so many friends growing up, many I’m still friends with today! "

"This should not be getting asked in this modern world!"

Bunny Grant and May Myers -- D&A County Winter Foursomes Winners
The D&A Winter Foursomes Final was played today at Windyhill Golf Course

Douglas Park's Elinor [Bunny] Grant and Clober's May Myers beat Kay McColl and Helen Burnet (Hilton Park) by the margin of 4&3.

With extremely difficult conditions and Baltic weather all four ladies showed great guts and stamina. The Damson Gin revived them all on the edge of the 15th green!   Bunny must be their oldest winner of this competition – she first won in 1985 !! The salver was presented in 1972 by Miss Norah Wallace.   Together with May, they have now won on six occasions, and they have each won with other partners once.

Janice Moodie Trophy - Clober's Nichola Ferguson is 1st in the 18 - 21 Age Group

Leading prizewinners (left to right): Charlotte Munro, Nichola Ferguson, Rachel Polson, Lesley Atkins and Rachel Walker - click to enlarge

Report by Carol Whyte:
A total of 39 players played in the Janice Moodie Trophy at Windyhill Golf Club today. The course was in fantastic condition considering the recent wet weather. The green staff are to be congratulated as they have done an amazing job on the course and had the greens running at 11 on the stimp metre making it very challenging day for the girls. The girls also faced some tough pin positions given that the semi finals of the Gents Club Championship was being played later in the evening.

The competition was a outstanding advert for Scottish girls golf with a field including Scottish girls internationalists as well as some of the promising younger players . The ages ranged from 11 - 21 and the handicaps from +1 to 29. The ladies who had kindly volunteered to ball spot today were very impressed with the quality of the golf that they saw. A mention also has to go to one of our youngest competitiors, Charlotte Munro aged 11, who managed to win her age category despite having rushed from finising school in Gullane earlier in the day.

Rachel Polson was the overall winner with a gross 73 for a nett 67. Lesley Atkins equalled the score of 73 to win the the scratch prize. Both are to be congratulated on their scores.

Once again the girls were well look after thanks to Janice's generosity and enjoyed drinks and lunch courtesy of Janice after the competition.

Lastly thanks must go to everyone involved in organising the day and also to Janice for her continuing support of this popular event.

In the other semi-final, Aileen Baker, playing over her home course, will meet the No 6 seed, Fiona McLean, also a Hilton Park member. Emma Kennedy is the 2009 Janice Moodie Trophy Winner

13 year old Emma Kennedy from Paisley Golf Club won the rescheduled Janice Moodie Trophy at Windyhill today.
Emma scored 100 less her handicap of 31 for a net 69, and won by two strokes from Scottish Junior Internationalist Rachael Watton (Mortonhall) who had a net 71 off a handicap of 2. Rachel won the 15-21 Age group prize from fellow internationalist Eilidh Briggs (Kilmacolm) who had 75 less 1 net 74.
Alexandra Duffy (Cathkin Braes) won the 11-14 Age group category with 102 less 27 net 75.

Unfortunately due to the reschedlued date the number of competitiors in the 2009 Janice Moodie Trophy played at Windyhill Golf Club yesterday was somewhat reduced.
However the competion still managed to attract a high quality field with a number of the girls playing the course for the first time. The organisers hope to see all the competitiors return next season when hopefully they will have better weather to play on the original date.
