(Scores highlighted below)

As a prelude to the World Team Cup at the adjacent Westerwood Golf Resort, 40 disabled golfers from 7 countries are playing in the Scottish Championships at Dullatur Golf Club this week.

Started on Monday 11 July and running through to the final round on Wednesday 13 July, players  compete for the coveted title of Scottish Championship in a 54-hole event.

Jim Gales, the Chairman of the SDGP said, "We are hoping that the weather won't play such a big role in our events this year, as this is the first of our three majors in 2011.  We have received some fantastic support from Trusts and Foundations from across the UK and the assistance from Scottish businesses which, in these difficult times, is very welcome".

Part of this support has come via a Parliamentary Motion (S4M-00017) submitted by Murdo Fraser, which has currently got the backing of some thirty MSP'sincluding; Richard Simpson, John Pentland, Ruth Davidson, Elaine Murray, Joan McAlpine, Chic Brodie, Neil Findlay, Jamie McGrigor, Mary Scanlon, Stuart McMillan, Jackson Carlaw, Humza Yousaf, Bob Doris, John Park, Alex Johnstone and Nanette Milne, and states,

"World Disabled Golf (lodged on 13 May 2011): That the Parliament welcomes the 2011 Scottish Pan-Disability Open Golf Championship, scheduled to take place at Dullatur and Westerwood golf courses from 11 to 18 July; thanks the organiser, Scottish Disability Golf Partnership (SDGP) for all its work in putting on the event, which will welcome over 50 golfers from across Scotland and abroad who will compete in the inaugural four-day, four-team Ryder Cup of disabled golf, with the four teams being Scotland, England, Celtic Nations and a World Squad; notes that this is Scotland's largest golf event ever arranged for disabled people and some of the top disabled golfers in the world will participate; recognises the important work of the SDGP, which is governed and operated by disabled people and actively encourages and involves anyone of any age with a disability, serious health problem or mobility issue and their coaches who wish to play golf; notes that SDGP membership includes amputees, blind people, deaf people, people with learning difficulties, people with Down's syndrome, people
who have had a stroke or heart attack, wheelchair users and people with other similar issues who wish to learn or play the sport, and hopes that the open will be a great success."

Megan and Eilidh do well in Scottish Under 21 Girls

All the prizewinners - Courtesy of the SLGA

Stirling University student Kelsey MacDonald (pictured above with all the winners) finished top of the class for the third year in a row in the Scottish Under-21 girls open amateur stroke-play golf championship at Dunfermline Golf Club today.
The 19-year-old Scottish women’s champion from the Nairn Dunbar club signed off in champion style with a two-under-par 70, the joint lowest round of the tournament, for a one-over-par total of 217.
That gave her a four-stroke winning margin from last year’s Scottish Women’s Champion, Renfrewshire's Megan Briggs (Kilmacolm) (72-271) with Gillian Monteith (Portpatrick Dunskey) giving her best performance in a national tournament to finish third on 272, also closing with a 72.
Megan had a little bit of everything in her round today - an eagle 3 at the long 15th, birdies at the long seventh, 11th, long 17th and long 18th and then, on the downside, a double bogey 5 at the short 16th and other bogeys at the fourth, eighth, 10th and 14th in halves of 36. She fought well to try an recover from her one bad hole in the 1st round of the tournament when she had a 5 over par 9 at the 6th.

Eilidh Briggs, the 2010 Renfrewshire champion, finished fourth with a 77 for 225 and won the Menzies Cup for the best performance over the three rounds by an Under-18 year old.

Well done to Alyson McKechin (Elderslie) who finished well to be up in the top 10 of the tournament

West of Scotland's Rachael Taylor, Jill Meldrum (Dullater) and Natasha Qayum (Ranfurly Castle) all finished well.

Pamela Pretswell is Runner Up in the Scottish Under 21's Stroke Play Championships

Scottish schoolgirls title-winner Kelsey MacDonald added another national tournament victory to her collection when she won the Scottish Under-21 girls’ open amateur stroke-play golf championship at Powfoot Golf Club on the shores of the Solway Firth today.
Kelsey had three fine sub-par rounds of 70, 70 and 71 against the women’s par of 74 for an 11-under-par total of 211.
She led at the end of the first round, was headed by Scottish universities title-holder Pamela Pretswell (Bothwell Castle) at the end of the second round but kept her nerve and her touch to prevail by one shot from Pamela after the third and final round.
Pamela had shot a seven-under 67 to surge to the front after 36 holes but she could manage “only” a par 74 at the last time of asking and that left the door open for MacDonald’s steadiness to win the day.
