RENFREWSHIRE COUNTY GIRLS COACHING SESSION AT GOUROCK GOLF CLUB

Renfrewshire Juniors have fun at Gourock Golf Club
A wild wet and windy day saw the start of the RLCGA girls golfing meet ups, today which was hosted hosted by Gourock Golf Club.

Everyone was very grateful to leave the waterproofs behind and make use of the fabulous new indoor facility.
The session was led by club professional Derek Watters and we were very well supported with 15 young ladies attending spilt into two session times.

Thanks to the girls who took time out of their study sessions and to all the parents for bringing the girls along.  The girls participated in making use of the technology at the facility and many enjoyed the excitement of the fun Zombie game at the end of the second session.

It was a good opportunity for the girls to meet each other and hopefully in the coming sessions build on their friendships.

Grateful thanks to Honorary President, Pearl Orr, County Captain June Lockhart and Vice-Captain Sandra Littlejohn for coming along to meet the girls and supporting the session.

Thanks to Gillian Kyle (Junior Secretary) for leading the meet ups and for steering us all in the right direction and thanks also to Lynda Bradley (Junior Convenor, Kilmacolm) for supporting the session also.

The next session is planned for Sunday 3rd February at Cowglen, anyone who hasn’t already intimated they would like to come along please get in touch with Gillian at gilliank17@sky.com.

Thanks go to Claire Barclay for the news

MAUREEN WOODHEAD BOWS OUT AFTER WINNING 25 CHAMPIONSHIPS

Golfer bows out after winning 25th championship

Maureen Woodhead (pictured above) is retiring with a record haul of ladies' titles at her home town club.
The 60-year-old won her maiden championship in 1993 and has dominated almost ever since, notching title number 25 at the recent 2018 tournament.
Maureen is now leaving on a high to spend more time with her husband Neil at the couple's new base in the Lake District.
She told the Tele: "I've won it now for 25 years so there's a pressure that comes with that.
"I wanted to finish sort of unbeaten, if you like.
"Neil doesn't play golf, he enjoys walking and climbed Mount Kilimanjaro in 2010 for Quarriers so I can see myself walking a lot more now."
Maureen started out playing hockey before her late first husband, Nicol Skinner, encouraged her to take up golf.
The sport runs in the family, with her father Dan Hendry, who passed away two years ago, a past captain at Gourock and former Greenock Golf Club champion.
Maureen was persuaded by Nicol to join the Cowal View course in '79.
Nicol, who was himself a multiple championship winner, died in 2001 and the flag pole stands in his memory outside the clubhouse.
Maureen said: "I think he was fed up picking me up from accident and emergency with broken ankles because of hockey and encouraged me to take up golf.
"I won my first championship in '93 and won it every year apart from 2008 when I was beaten in the semi-final.
"Until I recently changed my car and sold the house, I lived in Golf Road, played golf and drove a Golf."
During her competitive career, Maureen also won British and Scottish Civil Service Ladies' titles.
She was Inverclyde's 'champion of champions' five times, enjoyed success with Gourock in the Greenlees Trophy and served as vice-captain of the Renfrewshire team in 2009 before helping them to claim their first national crown the following year - the first in over two decades.

She thanked all for their best wishes and congratulations on her achievement.

She said “Those of you who attended the Prizegiving will already know that I have decided to retire from playing in the Championship.  It has been a fantastic time for me but things move on and Neil and I are looking forward to our new life (at least on a part time basis) in England.”

“I will still be around the club - there's no getting rid of me yet - it's been a huge part of my life.  Good luck to all the champions in the future. xx

LOCAL PLAYER MAUREEN WOODHEAD WINS RENFREWSHIRE JUNE MEDAL AT GOUROCK AND EMMA KENNEDY WINS THE SCRATCH

A smaller field than normal played in today's June Medal at Gourock GC, partly due to it's location and partly due to the West Vets match at Kilmacolm, which tied up some of the RLCGA players
Sadly, the weather forecast didn't get it right today.... dry in the morning and showers in the afternoon and evening it said. So we had showers and a fair breeze in the morning, drier in the afternoon and torrential rain at night time when the pesky midges came out to play !

Maureen Woodhead - Winner of June Medal and Division 1
The difficult conditions were reflected in the scores, however local player Maureen Woodhead returned an impressive gross 84, nett 75 to win Division 1 and the Medal with Emma Kennedy (Paisley) - pictured below winning the Scratch with an 83.

Emma Kennedy - Scratch Winner

Maureen Neilson - Winner of Division 2

Maureen Neilson, from nearby Greenock Golf Club, was the winner of division 2 handicap section with a gross 93, net 79. It must be 'Mo's' new cataract free eyes that made all the difference.

Even though we didn't enjoy the best of weather, the views when the sky did clear a bit were amazing and the view from the 18th tee is fantastic....playing it is another matter !

Maureen Woodhead -- Click to enlarge On the Gillian Kirkwood Website there was an article on Multi - Year Champions
West of Scotland player -- Maureen Woodhead (Skinner) was reading their article about multi-year champions.

Until 2008, when she was defeated in the semi-final, she was Lady Champion at Gourock Golf Club for 15 years consecutively.
"This could be a starting figure for our investigations!!" --- Any advance on 15 years, then?
