Louise Duncan is top qualifier in the 2021 Scottish Ladies Amateur Championship at Gullane

From the Scottish Golf Website

Louise Duncan from West Kilbride carded a superb second round 65 to top the leaderboard at the end of the 36-hole qualifier for the 2021 Scottish Women’s Amateur Championship at Gullane.

Louise reached the semi-finals the last time the championship was played in 2019 and now she has the chance to go even further following an exceptional performance capped by a stunning eagle on her final hole.

The Scottish internationalist carded a one under par first round of 73 on Gullane’s No. 1 course before firing two eagles and four birdies in a bogey-free round on the host club’s No. 2 course to set a pace none of the other competitors could match.

Duncan’s nine under par 138 aggregate saw her top the list of 16 qualifiers a single shot ahead of fellow international Shannon McWilliam (Aboyne), Penelope Brown (Auchterarder) and first round leader Luisa Gibson (Irvine) while Rachel Foster (Prestwick St Nicholas) and Tara Mactaggart (Minto), another of the semi-finalists in 2019, also comfortably made it into the draw for the match play stage on seven under par 140.

Ellen Caton (St Regulus Ladies) and Lorna McClymont (Milngavie) also made the weekend with a minimum of fuss in a share of seventh place on 141, as did Jennifer Saxton (Dunfermline) who was alone in ninth place on 142, but it was a different story for Broomieknowe and Gullane member, Hannah Darling, who came into the championship as favourite following her win on Sunday at the St Rule Trophy but needed all her resolve to make it through after carding a morning round of 74 on No. 1.

In the end the teenaged GB & I Curtis Cup squad member showed why she is regarded as one of Scotland’s brightest prospects by carding six birdies in a battling four under par 69 which saw her climb up into a share of tenth place alongside Carmen Griffiths (Aboyne) and Hazel MacGarvie (Royal Troon) on four under par 143.

Chloe Goadby (St Regulus Ladies) reached the final two years ago at Kilmarnock (Barassie) and now has the chance to go one better after posting rounds of 72 and 73 to share 13th place with club-mate Gillian Paton and Katie Wright (Stranraer) on two under par 145.

It is the same for 2015 champion Clara Young (North Berwick) who posted rounds of 75 and 71 but then faced an anxious wait before claiming the sixteenth and last spot following a card countback on 146.

Carinne Taylor (Nairn) and Megan Ashley (Blairgowrie) were the unfortunate players to miss out on countback but they had the consolation of qualfying for the second flite competition involving those players finishing in 17th to 36th place in the stroke play.

The match play starts today (Saturday) and ends with the two finals on Sunday afternoon.

All scores from the 2021 Scottish Women’s Amateur Championship will be registered by players on the course using the Scottish Golf App. This means that live scores from Gullane will be available for everyone to follow on the Scottish Golf Website.

MORE INFO

The UK’s first ladies-only Pro-Am is back for the third year running, and this time it’s heading to The Irvine Golf Club in Ayrshire on Tuesday October 6.

We know many of you were disappointed not to be able to head to the AIG Women's Open at Royal Troon this year, but this Scottish jaunt could be the next best thing.

Designed to let you experience some light-hearted team competition (and also win some fabulous team and individual prizes), the teams consistent of three amateurs and one professional.

Don’t know a female pro who would be up for it?

Well never fear, the organisers will find someone suitable to partner you up with. All you need to provide is yourself and two pals.

Entry is £255 per team of three amateurs and £30 per pro; this includes tea or coffee on arrival and a post-comp lunch, too.

Many teams have already signed up from across the UK, but there’s still time to gather your team before registration closes on September 18. To enter simply follow the link HERE

If you’re travelling from far away, well why not turn it into an excuse for a once-in-a-lifetime Scottish golf holiday with the girls?

The organisers have secured a special rate for Ladies Pro-Am players at the charming Riverside Lodge Hotel in Irvine, and also reserved tee times especially for the Pro-Am teams as nearby courses Glasgow Gailes on Monday October 5 and Kilmarnock Barassie on Wednesday October 7.

A few days away with friends, playing golf, winning prizes (hopefully)

JULIE WALKER MESSAGE
In 2018, the idea of setting up a female only Pro-Am came about after chatting to a few golfing friends, who liked the idea but found most pro-ams expensive and hard to get in to, so I approached my golf club, Burhill, to find out if they would support this idea and they introduced me to the PGA, both were very supportive as there was no other female only pro-am at the time and there is very few opportunities for the female PGA’s pros to play against each other.

With limited sponsorship, the ladies entry fee of £255.00 per team of 3, pays for the teams food, the pro’s prize fund, PGA levy and PGA admin fee for running the day.  I look to get prizes from partners as we get closer to the event, currently www.arran.com have agreed to provide some prizes and am currently working on other ideas.

The format is a stableford, for both Pro’s and amateurs, everyone play off the red tees, both of which the pros find fun and a change from their normal stroke play events, best 2 scores on each hole apart from par 3’s were all 4 scores count.  The pro’s play their own stableford and the top 10 players, get prize money from £550 to £100  https://ladiesproam.com/meet-the-pros/

Following the success of the 2018, Pro-Am at Burhill, in 2019, we played at Cuddington, both in Surrey, I decided to bring the event to Irvine in 2020, to give the surrey ladies a new experience and to support my fathers golf club, I  also played there for a couple of years as a teenager, before a golf gap of 25 years.

We have 22 team slots and I currently have 11 teams from Surrey signed up, they will also play, Glasgow Gailes on Monday the 5th and Kilmarnock Barassie on Wednesday the 7th, which are also options for any team or individual playing in the event.  At the moment, I have 2 scottish teams interested, one is led by Pauline Patrick of Irvine and Susan Wood (Drumpellier) from the Scottish women’s amateur team.  I have written to 70 women via their golf clubs over the last couple of weeks, dropped off posters at Troon Ladies, Irvine, Kilmarnock Barassie, Prestwick St Nicholas, St Cuthbert’s and Irvine.

It would be great if you could add this event to your website and help me encourage some Scottish teams to join in, it is a fun event.

The PGA website is   https://pgagbi.bluegolf.com/bluegolf/pgagbi20/event/pgagbi20822/index.htm   the logos and more info will go on here in the next couple of weeks,

PAULINE HAS A HOLE IN ONE AT BOGSIDE

Irvine Golf Club (Bogside) Lady Captain, Pauline Patrick (pictured left) had a day to remember at the annual members & guests competition at the club on Tuesday 27th August, for at the 126 yard eighth hole she holed out in one shot, to the delight of herself and her playing partners

The hole in one helped Pauline and her guest, Catherine Malcolm (Prestwick St Nicholas) to go on and record the best score of the day to win the competition.
